An early morning run became a gruesome nightmare after a man was allegedly stabbed while jogging past a pizza shop.

Victoria Police are investigating the grisly attack on Spring Street in Reservoir, northern Melbourne, just before 8am on Friday.

It's believed the runner, 24, was stabbed in the abdomen by an unknown male as he jogged in the area following a Anzac Day dawn service.

Terrifying footage shows the bleeding man running towards a petrol station.

As he turned around, blood was seen dripping profusely down one of his legs as he clutched his abdomen.

The man then leaned against the wall and removed his shirt to stem the flow of blood.

He later sunk to the ground and leaned against the wall while customers and later paramedics and police officers provided assistance.

One service station worker told 9News the scene was 'shocking' and they 'couldn't understand what was happening'.

'I just saw him coming and he was coming screaming here... He was saying "I got stabbed, I got stabbed, I got stabbed",' the worker said.

'I gave him a towel and paper towel to hold it, asked him to sit down and finally he sat down and then [the bleeding] stopped a little bit.'

Victoria Police said the man was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The exact circumstances of the incident are yet to be determined and the investigations remain ongoing.
