Brits rage over 'skinny' Easter eggs despite the slimmed-down treats costing almost £20

Brits have been left outraged after opening their Easter treats - only to find 'skinny' versions of their chocolate treats.

Thousands of chocolate lovers across the UK eagerly unwrapped their eggs on Sunday morning but were instead presented with a 'flattened' version.

Left baffled, people joked that their eggs had 'been on Ozempic' - referring to the Hollywood-loved weight loss drug - while others asked 'where's the rest of it?!'

Some chocolate companies - such as Tony's Chocolonely - were quick to reassure customers that the unusual shape did not mean that there were getting less chocolate.

But others appeared to have been hit once again by 'shrinkflation' - as this year's eggs have increased in price by as much as 50 per cent on last year while shrinking in size.

Disappointed shoppers soon took to TikTok to express their anguish, showing off their 'skinny' eggs - despite costing almost £20.

Nick Toteda, who is from America but lives in London with his husband Ant, even said British people need to 'explain themselves' as he unwrapped his slimmed-down Maltesers egg.

In a video that has racked up more than a million views, he said: 'Okay, British people explain yourselves. Why am I waking up, Easter morning, my husband's like "oh, I got you an Easter egg love, Maltesers. I unbox it...

'Why are your eggs on Ozempic? Why is your egg giving, Gigi Hadid? This egg called me obese in a British accent. What? Are all of your eggs this skinny? Like, honestly body goals.'

Nick then unwrapped the egg and held it up to the camera so his viewers could see it from all angles.

'See, I'm not crazy. Like, that's insane,' he said as he revealed its skinny appearance.

Nick wasn't the only one to have met with Easter disappointment.

Another TikTok user, @samannfox had the Tony's Chocolonely Easter Egg, and wrote: 'No sorry is this Easter egg actually some sort of sick joke... where's the rest of it.

'£12 I gave for that... Have I been robbed or what? I know the price of chocolate has gone up but what sort of sick joke is this!'

She then filmed a measly five chocolate eggs rolling around at the bottom of the packet and said that the main egg was 'hollow as well'.

One commenter even asked: 'Where's the chocolate?'

The brand explained: 'We see how the different shape could be a surprise, but rest assured you are getting a whopping 242g of chocolate, similar to other eggs on the choco shelf with a regular shape

'We can’t make change in the industry without Choco Fans like you. So thank you for your support.'

Other complaints on TikTok were rife - and it appeared that multiple brands have been affected by the change

Georgia @burkeyg said: 'Why has my egg been on the Ozempic?

Ciara @cxara.oop, who had the M&Ms and Bounty eggs said: 'Happy easter to everyone but Jamie Oliver who I'm sure is somehow to blame for my snatched Easter Eggs. Why are my Easter Eggs skinny legends?'

As @paigebakedthat unwrapped her Celebrations Easter Egg, she said: 'Is this a joke? Can it get any worse.'

And @alivia.loiuisex asked: 'Can someone please tell me why wtf my Easter egg is SKINNY!?!? Easter is my one excuse to be a fatty and now they're being stingy with the chocolate!?'

Another said they had the same issue with their Mini Eggs Inclusions egg, which costs £15 at most supermarkets.

The price of chocolate has risen by 16.5 per cent in a year - compared to a 4.4 per cent increase for supermarket food and drink overall - according to inflation tracking by Which?.

It comes after a steep fall in global cocoa production, driven by higher temperatures hindering the quality and quantity of beans, started driving wholesale costs to record highs.

Taking to the comments, angry shoppers wrote: 'The current cost of living crisis we’re going through and Easter egg companies taking the p*** like this. Chocolate is a luxury now';

'I think all the chocolate companies had a meeting to agree on this because NO ONE would have dared be the only one! INSIDE JOB!!';

'They’re basically 2D at this point';

'In 10 years we’ll be paying 15 quid for an imaginary egg';

'We will get just a printed out picture next year';

'I paid £10 for an egg last year that is £15 this year, that's not inflation that's daylight robbery!!'

In March, it was revealed that an 80g pouch of Terry's chocolate orange mini eggs at Lidl cost 99p in the run up to Easter in 2024 but has gone up to £1.35 while shrinking to 70g - meaning a price rise of 56 per cent per 100g, according to Which?

The same product, which originally cost more at other supermarkets, has gone up by 51 per cent at Asda, 37 per cent at Sainsbury's and 14 per cent at Tesco.

At Morrisons, Which? found a 200g Cadbury Creme Egg 5 Pack Mixed Chocolate Box had increased in price from £2.62 last year to £4 this year.

A Nestle Kit Kat Chunky milk chocolate Easter egg stayed at the same price at the supermarket but has reduced in size from 129g to 110g - making it 17 per cent more expensive per 100g.

At Tesco, Which? found a Twix white chocolate Easter egg had increased from £5 to £6 on last year and had also shrunk from 316g to 258g, meaning the unit price per 100g had gone up by 47 per cent.

Meanwhile, Asda Fruit & Nut Milk Chocolate 200g is 73 per cent more expensive, rising from £1.33 to £2.30.

At Ocado, a 110g NOMO Creamy Choc Buttons share bag 110g has gone up from £2.43 to £3.97, a 63 per cent increase.

Which? money and retail editor Reena Sewraz said: 'There's no better way to enjoy the spring bank holiday than spending time with loved ones and indulging in a cracking assortment of Easter chocolate, but if you don't want to pay more for less, it is worth shopping around.

'You can still get a good deal on your Easter chocolate by looking for special offers, comparing the price per gram or if you can, hold out until Easter Sunday when many of the eggs are likely to be reduced.'

A Mars Wrigley UK spokeswoman said: 'We will always absorb pricing pressures where we can, but rising manufacturing costs - driven in part by well-documented increases in the cost of cocoa - have meant that we've had to adjust some of our product sizes to minimise changes to list price, ensuring our snacks continue to deliver great quality and affordable value for families this Easter.'

A Nestle spokeswoman said: 'Like every manufacturer, we have seen significant increases in the cost of cocoa, making it much more expensive to manufacture our products.

'As always, we continue to be more efficient and absorb increasing costs where possible.

'To maintain the same high quality and delicious products that consumers know and love, it has sometimes been necessary to make adjustments to the price or weight of some of our products.

'Retail pricing is always at the sole discretion of individual retailers.'

Ocado said: 'With external factors continuing to push up the price of a range of commodities, we're doing all we can to keep prices low for our customers.

'We also work closely with our suppliers to make sure pricing is fair, without compromising on quality.

'We've already reduced hundreds of prices across our Big Price Drop initiative this year and continue to match over 10,000 products to Tesco.com as part of the Ocado Price Promise; delivering a wide range of choice for all needs and budgets.'

Earlier this month it was revealed that the Terry's Chocolate Orange had also been hit by 'shrinkflation' and had 'lost' 12 grams of chocolate.

To the horror of shoppers, the French manufacturer of the iconic sweet treat has quietly dropped its weight from 157g to 145g – the second time it has shrunk in less than a decade.

With each ‘orange’ still consisting of 20 segments, it means each piece now weighs just under half a gram less, at 7.26g – one-sixth less than it did as recently as 2016
