People are just realising they've been pronouncing 'Chupa Chups' all wrong - here's how you should say it

While most Brits probably think they know the UK snack scene like the back of their hand - many have been shocked to discover they have been mispronouncing one popular treat.

The staple at every children's party, Chupa Chups are famed across Britain for their vibrant, colourful packaging and bountiful fruity flavours.

But despite being one of the most popular sweets on the market, it turns out most people aren't correctly pronouncing them.

According to the online Spanish class provider Preply, though most British people instinctively say 'Chuh-pa-Chups' - this is wrong.

The correct pronunciation is 'Choo-pa Choops', the linguistics app revealed.

Although popular in the UK, Chupa Chups lollipops are actually made by a Spanish brand of the same name.

Because of their Spanish origins, the pronunciation of the sweets follow their phonetics rather than those instinctively used by Brits.

The name of the sweets is derived from the method by which they are consumed, with 'chupar' coming from the Spanish word to suck.

In Spanish, 'chupar' is pronounced 'choo-par', with the lollipop's name having been abbreviated from this.

Meanwhile, the second part of the name - Chups - isn't specifically derived from any particular word, but follows the same Spanish phonetic pattern as the first word, meaning it is similarly pronounced 'choo'.

Overall then, the sugary treats are pronounced 'Choo-pa Choops'.

According to Preply, the reason most Brits butcher the pronunciation is down to the typical way the English say the letter 'u' - since this makes a 'yew' sound.

For example, in English this 'yew' sound is used in words like 'Tuesday' and 'cube', whereas in Spanish, the same letter is typically used for 'oo' words and is pronounced as it is in the words 'balloon' or 'food'.

In the UK, Chupa Chups come in a variety of delicious flavours including strawberry, cola, watermelon, orange, apple and sour.

Four of the brands most well-known flavours are strawberry, strawberry & cream, apple and cola

It's not the only Spanish word that most Britons are getting wrong.

Many of us are making a completely muddle of the word 'paella', which should really be pronounced 'Pae-ay-ah', with the 'll' sounding like a soft 'y' rather than an English 'l.'

Similarly, the delectable fried treats, Churros, should be pronounced with a rolling 'r' rather than the flat English version.

And Spain's famous cured ham, jamón, should be said as 'ha-mon' with a soft h rather than hard British J.

It comes after foodies discovered a little-know trick to easily unravelling Chupa Chups lollipops.

The confectionery brand is somewhat infamous for difficult packaging that wraps around delicious sweets.

The most effective method for opening the sweet is to hold the lollipop's head in place with one hand and to use two fingers to pinch the bottom of the wrapper and twist in opposite directions around the candy.

The wrapper will loosen immediately and you will be able to easily pull the packaging off.

A woman officially revealed a fool-proof method to open Chupa Chups lollipops in seconds.

Sydney Purl, from the UK, demonstrated the simple trick in a video.

'There's a new way to open Chupa Chups!' Sydney said. 'You no longer have to wrestle the wrapper off.'

She simply placed her grip on the bottom of the wrapper and the lollipop's head and then twisted in opposite directions to unravel the packaging.

'Now you know how to open your Chupa,' she captioned the clip.

Her post amazed thousands of people, with many previously unaware of how to properly open the sweet treat.

'You mean after all these years, there's a way to open them without a struggle? And nobody told me?' a man asked.

'OMG why didn't I know this?' another commented.

'My kids will be so thrilled to see this!'

But not everyone was impressed, and a few even claimed to already know the hack.

'I thought everyone knew how to open them,' a woman said.

'This has been how you open them since they were made.'

'It's common sense.'
