Tennis skorts are trending again! 11 styles loved by experts and editors, from $19

These are the styles we're loving on- and off- the tennis court.

When you hear the word skort, you may immediately think of the skirt-in-the-front, short-in-the-back bottoms you wore in elementary school. And while some TikTokers are still discovering the versatility of that style, the far more comfortable exercise skort — which features a skirt with attached shorts hidden underneath — is making a resurgence.

Especially since trends like "tenniscore" have taken over social media (Etsy recently named "sports-core" as one of its top trends for spring and summer) and pickleball has become one of the biggest pastimes in recent years.

"By design athletic wear is very casual, which is why skorts have become so popular," says on-air fashion expert and stylist Cindy Conroy. "They bring an everyday luxury to areas of our life that are often void of it. It’s the whole concept of treat yourself."

Thus, skorts and tennis skirts aren't just for workouts or matches, either. They’re a good choice for hiking, running, walking or even lounging. Plus, many of them have hidden pockets in the shorts underneath, which you don’t always find with other athleisure pieces, like leggings or bike shorts.

Below, we rounded up 11 trending, editor-loved, expert-recommended and top-rated options that you can wear for any activitystarting at $19.

"At first, I thought this length might be a little awkward for athletic activities, but I find it easy and comfortable to move in," said freelance writer Marci Robin in her review. "Plus, I’m never worried about showing more skin than I want to when I’m wearing it, especially if I suddenly find myself lunging after a ball on the court. Meanwhile, the functionality of the skort consists of stretchy fabric as well as moisture-wicking and anti-odor properties so you can focus on your swing (or errands!).

Frequently Asked Questions

Like any athleisure, athletic skorts are one of the most versatile styles you can wear. They're not just for the gym, after all, and some of our editors' and our expert's favorite ways to dress the trend is for casual wear.

For instance, Conroy says "The next time you wear an oyster white skort, pair it with a cropped tank top and floral choker necklace. The combination brings a softness to the ensemble." Or, "For a rocker chic take on black athletic skorts, style with a well worn black t-shirt and high top Converse shoes," she adds.

Chataigne, on the other hand, personally loves styling athletic skorts with chunky loafers and baggy sweatshirts to showcase their versatility. While most athletic skorts are neutral, Chataigne finds this the perfect opportunity to experiment with color.

"People should not get stuck on only wearing white and embrace color," she says. "Imagine pairing a green skirt with a khaki sweater and adding a trench and boots for fall. Think outside the style box!"

"Keep an eye out for key features like UPF protection, hidden pockets and moisture wicking," suggests Conroy. "Some skorts even have built in anti-microbial tech so your active skirt goes far beyond just looking great."

Besides functionality, there are multiple styles of skorts to shop "If you want to play with pleats – there’s a skort for that," she says. "There’s also flounce skirts, striped skorts and cargo options." But if you're prioritizing comfort, "high rise designs are your best friend since they look amazing on every body type," Conroy recommends. For those who want to "showcase their legs," the stylist believes "ultra minis are fun" and the way to go.

But if you don't know where to begin, Chataigne says to "opt for a fit at the smallest part of your thigh for ideal styling." And of course, whatever style you're most comfortable with!
