Away for the Day Device Policy
DMS has an “Away for the Day” cell phone and electronic device policy. With the implementation of 1:1 Chromebooks, there is no longer any need for a student to use a cell phone as an instructional device. The “Away for the Day” device policy is intended to help provide a safe and distraction-free learning environment.
Expectations for Students:
Students will silence their phones/tablets/earbuds and store them in their bookbags as they enter our school each day, where they will remain until thy leave each school day. Phones, tablets, and/or earbuds should not be visible or in use during the school day.
In the event that a student needs to contact home for any reason, they may do so from any school office phone.
If a student fails to adhere to the “Away for the Day” policy, the following steps will take place:
- Teacher will ask the student for the phone/tablet/earbuds.
- Teacher will label phone/earbuds with student name and deliver them to the GL office and parents will be notified.
- Parents can:
- Pick up the device the same day. (No student consequence)
- Allow the school to hold the device until 4 pm the next day and return it to the student then. (No student consequence)
- Parent chooses after-school detention for the student and the device will be returned to the student by the end of that day.
- If a student does not comply with the request, an administrative referral will be written for failure to follow directions.
