NBA Star Donovan Mitchell Trains With Dragons in High-Flying How to Train Your Dragon Teaser

Cleveland Cavs' Donovan Mitchell takes training with dragons literally.

By Cassidy Ward

“To be the best, you have to train the best,” said Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard Donovan Mitchell in a short teaser for the upcoming live action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. “But maybe I overdid it.”

Apparently having misread the title, Mitchell isn’t learning how to train your dragon, but how to train with dragons, in this multimedia crossover.

The live action reimagining of How to Train Your Dragon hits theaters everywhere June 13, pulling all of our favorite dragons and Vikings from the Isle of Berk out of the computer animated landscape and into the real world. In the meantime, Toothless is making a quick stop in Cleveland before his live action Hollywood debut, and he’s not alone. Dragons of several varieties gather on rooftops and on neighborhood lawns, casually lobbing fireballs at one another. In addition to Toothless, we see a Deadly Nadder (possibly Stormfly), a Hotburple (possibly Grump), and others.

Mitchell’s unconventional training regimen appears to be working, with a newspaper headline reading, “THE CAVS AND DONOVAN MITCHELL ARE ON FIRE THIS SEASON.” Of course, when you train with dragons, fire is an actual risk, and Mitchell suffers a few minor scorch marks to his clothes. That’s just the risk you take when you’re training dragons, or training with dragons.

How to Train Your Dragon, in theaters June 13, 2025

How to Train Your Dragon is based on the book series of the same name, written by Cressida Cowell. The franchise features three animated films: How to Train Your Dragon, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

That’s just for starters, the franchise also features short films, several animated television series, and beginning on May 22, 2025, an entire theme park world at Universal’s Epic Universe. Three-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois directed all 3 of the How to Train Your Dragon animated films and returns to directing duties for the live action reimagining.

Fans will return to the Isle of Berk, a land where Vikings and dragons have been at war for generations. But when Hiccup, son of the Viking leader, meets a young dragon, the two become friends and the fates of both Vikings and dragons are changed forever.

It’s just as well, because a much more dangerous threat is preparing to rear its head and these high-flying friends are all that stand between a new era of peace and total destruction. How to Train Your Dragon stars Mason Thames as Hiccup, Gerard Butler reprising his role from the animated films as Chief Stoick the Vast, BAFTA nominee Nico Parker (Dumbo, The Last of Us) as Astrid, and Nick Frost (Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) as Gobber. Also starring Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), BAFTA nominee Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).
