Critics Consensus

Den of Thieves pays energetic homage to classic heist thrillers of the past; unfortunately, it never comes close to living up to its obvious inspirations.

Stephen Romei The Australian Butler and Schreiber deliver commanding performances. They are men who could explode at any moment, at work or at home. That nonstop ticking beneath their calm exteriors fills the film with a gripping tension. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 14, 2018 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Den of Thieves desperately wants to be Heat or The Killer when it grows up. Instead it's a daft, distant, drunken cousin to those pictures, but if you studiously avoid thinking about it, you can at least enjoy its moronic antics. Rated: 3/5 Feb 5, 2018 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The film's sole virtue is its finale - a complicated plot twist that sparks a belated, and brief, surge of interest. Rated: 2/5 Feb 2, 2018 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment A very well-written crime thriller that keeps the action to the fore but doesn't forget how important an intense a plot is as well. Butler is amazing in a role that he was born to play. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 19, 2025 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse It's one thing for the bad guys to shoot one another, but when cops place dozens of innocent people in the middle of an automatic gun battle it feels gratuitous even for a movie like this. Rated: 2/5 Feb 28, 2021 Full Review Dan Buffa KSDK News (St. Louis) The lesson is simple, ladies and gents. Don't judge a book or movie by its cover. There could be a fun toy waiting in that gift you didn't care to unwrap. Nov 10, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

KimB I enjoyed this movie! Action was on point! Rated 5 out of 5 stars01/10/25 Full Review Mark T Very good action heist movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars04/25/25 Full Review Hunter S I absolutely hate that people compare this movie to 'Heat' at all. The only thing they have in common is they both begin with an armored car heist. One of the infinite number of differences: This movie just continues to get worse and worse the longer you watch it. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars04/24/25 Full Review Marco L (CASTELLANO) Puede que no reinventen nada, pero entretienen. (ENGLISH) They may not reinvent the genre, but they sure entertain. Den of Thieves is one of those films that, without offering anything particularly new, manages to keep you engaged thanks to a solid execution. It’s tense, has well-paced action, and throws in a few twists that actually work… although the main issue is that you never really connect with any of the characters. And that’s no accident: pretty much everyone here is unlikeable to some degree. The sheriff, especially, is written to get under your skin from the very first scene. Ironically, that works in favor of the group of thieves, who—despite not being saints—end up earning a bit of sympathy by comparison. If you’re forced to pick a side, you’ll probably find yourself hoping the heist goes well. The pacing, while a little uneven in the middle, stays tight for the most part and delivers some genuinely tense moments. It might run a bit too long, but it never drags. You can tell there's craftsmanship behind the camera, even if the script leans on clichés or tries too hard to add depth to characters that never fully land. All in all, this is a fairly classic heist movie that doesn’t aim to please everyone, but does the job if you’re in the mood for action, gunfights, and a bit of attitude. It won’t change your life, but it might just save your movie night. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars04/23/25 Full Review Dan D This is a good heist movie. Many similarities to Heat by Michael Mann, but with a twist you don't see coming. Much better than it's sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars04/16/25 Full Review Landen D Good action movie. Gerad Butler plays a great character who has lost everything and might go about things not exactly how the book has it written, but very a smart detective none the less. Also great twist at the end.
