The long-awaited mass market paperback of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS hits the bookstores today. (Yes, we know you folks in the UK, Australia, South Africa, Ireland, New Zealand, and like places have had the UK mass market for ages, thanks, you can stop gloating now).

And yes, the paperback of DANCE does include a sample chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER. A lot of folks have been clamoring to know which one, and now it can be revealed: we've included the first Ser Barristan chapter from the novel-in-progress, wherein we glimpse the beginning of the Battle of Meereen. I hope you will all enjoy it.
The dragons are not flying alone, either. Also hitting the racks (and virtual racks) this morning in both the US and the UK is THE WIT AND WISDOM OF TYRION LANNISTER, a little hardcover stocking stuffer collecting most of the Imp's best (and worst) lines from the five novels published to date, illustrated by Jonty Clarke.
This one is meant as a Christmas book of sorts, small enough to slip into a stocking (if you have very big feet). We hope you get a kick out of it.
US edition

UK edition

And who knows, if our little venture meets with favor, perhaps next year we will do THE WIT AND WISDOM OF HODOR.
DANCE and WIT & WISDOM are both available at a bookstore near you, or from your favorite online retailer.

I've got the existing novels in the newest cover design (to match 'Dance') in hardback and am looking forward to getting the rest of the series in hardback also for myself; while gifting the paperbacks and reading the sample chapters :)
The Tyrion book is entirely quotes.
I guess I took the Hodor thing as seriously silly, so I gave my seriously silly opinion.
;)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I would have wanted a whole book of HODOR! ...sure. The Hodor memes are nice, though. =)
Now, seriously.. I like to have a copy of Dance in english.
My original tongue is spanish, but, I would like to read it in the original language and appreciate things that are lost in the translation.
About the wit and wisdom, if i get an extra money this summer it would be a nice gift for a friend.
It blends nicely with the Victarion chapter that you read an excerpt of. Victarion is extremely confident and eager to fight this battle where as Barristan is saddened to add another passage under his name in the White Book.
...a few minutes later...
now I feel kinda 'tupid...in my excitement I went to check on my Oct arrival of A World of I&F....;
DOH!! That's not 'til Oct. 2014! LOL
I just bought the Graphic version of AGOT's so, I'll have to work on my collection of a bit of everything until then. :)

Thank you so so much.
By the way, I've started reading your books this summer and I think you're a great writer. I hope you'll amnage to publish WOW soon.
"HODOR. HODOR. HODOR."
You know what book would be amazing and I would treasure till the end of my days? The Wit and Wisdom of Dolorous Edd. I would buy that immediately. He pretty much has the best quotes of any chapter he's in.
To appease my self I'm going to do a miniature wargame on the battle - just to see how it turns out...
I appreciated all the info about Ser Barristan's army forming behind the walls and his battle plan.
Looking over Dance for info on the opposing slave army.
I'll let everyone know how it turns out...

Trying to create the Unsullied out of commercial figures is a challenge though (1 foot high spiked helmets...!?) Not to mention the Legions (maybe converted Greek Hoplites assuming they are a bit retro in outlook...?)
Well I've already started on Barristan the Bold (thanks for the detailed description), to see even the miniature version of him charge out the gate, banners flying and war horns blasting will be worth the effort.

Not only is he a fascinating character in your books but Peter Dinklage embodies him perfectly, at least to my way of thinking. I've become a major fan of his work and am trying to see everything he's been in.
Thanks for writing such a great character for such a gifted actor to bring to life!
And it's not related to this precise entry, but it is related to A Song of Ice and Fire; I was reading Doctor Sleep (the new Stephen King novel, but I bet you already knew that) yesterday and I reached a part where one of the main characters mentions she was able to fight back because she imagined herself as Daenerys Targaryen from the Game of Thrones books, totally made my night!

I've posted other samples on my website.
If you live outside of the US and want to buy the Dance with Dragons US paperback, try Amazon US.
Anyone know how these releases are planed, and why it often takes soo long to get the paperback? Don't get me wrong I wish I could afford the hardcover editions for all my books. Unfortunately cost would be prohibitive, way beyond my modest means, and also space would be an issue, I couldn't store them...so paperbacks are for me (with some exceptions)!
I am way better off now because I just buy the e-books so I can read as fast and have a copy of the book the same day with the physical release date. Case in point...I have all the ASOIF novels on my phone...sorry, smartphone as it were...doing a re-read right now!
By the way, the Barristan Selmy sample chapter...fantastic! Bring on "The Winds Of Winter"!
I just wanted to thank you for your amazing books. I have never read any other books with such vivid and varied characters.
My favourite characters were Stranger and Sandor Clegane ( especially Stranger :) ), please keep them safe.
