F3

My name is Chris Oliver. I came to Sun through their acquisition of Seebeyond in September 2005. I'd like to present something about my current work – it’s not public yet but it should be open-sourced on java.net shortly.

My project is called F3 which stands for “Form follows function”, and its purpose was to explore making GUI programming easier in general.

F3 is actually a declarative Java scripting language with static typing for good IDE support and compile-time error reporting (unlike JavaScript...), type-inference, declarative syntax, and automatic data-binding with full support for 2d graphics and standard Swing components as well as declarative animation. You can also import java classes, create new Java objects, call their methods, and implement Java interfaces.

We have IDE plugins for both Netbeans and Eclipse Both plugins support as-you-type validation, code-completion, syntax highlighting, and hyperlink navigation (with control-mouse-over).

F3 attempts to demonstrate that we're not exploiting the full capabilities of the Java platform for GUI development and that together with supporting tools like F3, the Java platform is highly competitive with or superior to competing GUI development platforms such as Macromedia Flash/Flex/Open Laszlo, Adobe Apollo, Microsoft WPF/XAML, Mozilla XUL, AJAX/DHMTL..

F3 fully supports Swing as well as Java2D. In fact, we have a translator that can translate most of SVG to F3.

Here are some small examples to give you a flavor of what F3 is like:

 import f3.ui.canvas.\*; import f3.ui.\*; Canvas { content: Rect { x: 20 y: 20 height: 80 width: 300 arcHeight: 20 arcWidth: 20 fill: cyan stroke: purple strokeWidth: 2 } }

produces:

An example using image filters is:

 import f3.ui.\*; import f3.ui.canvas.\*; import f3.ui.filter.\*; Canvas { content: Text { x: 20 y: 20 content: "Welcome to F3" font: Font { face: VERDANA, style: [ITALIC, BOLD], size: 80 } fill: LinearGradient { x1: 0, y1: 0, x2: 0, y2: 1 stops: [Stop { offset: 0 color: blue }, Stop { offset: 0.5 color: dodgerblue }, Stop { offset: 1 color: blue }] } filter: [Glow {amount: 0.1}, Noise {monochrome: true, distribution: 0}] } }

which gives:

It’s also possible to use 2D content as a TexturePaint through the concept of a “Pattern” as in SVG, for example:

 import f3.ui.\*; import f3.ui.canvas.\*; Canvas { content: Ellipse { fill: Pattern { content: Polygon { points: [5, 5, 25, 5, 15, 25] fill: orange stroke: red strokeWidth: 3 } } cx: 100 cy: 50 radiusX: 90 radiusY: 40 stroke: black } }
which gives:

These snippets don’t demonstrate F3’s full capabilities.

Using F3, I’m able to write nearly exact replicas of many Flash or DHTML or Java programs in a remarkably short amount of time, for example this Flash program the F3 version below was written in 2 days):

This combination DHTML/Flash program the F3 version below (although incomplete) was also written in about 2 days:

Comments:

interesting! I'm looking forward to se the plugins available.

Hi Chris, glad to see F3 going public soon! The screenshots look really good. I will look forward to play with it, specially if the IDE support is good! cheers, -fred

i'd be also curious to see any statistics about: - saved LOC (how much shorter is a program, at least its UI, compared to alternatives, say pure java, or other jvm-scripting languages, as groovy?) - easy of mantainance -learning curve the snapshots look great!!

Posted by Valerio Schiavoni on November 10, 2006 at 03:06 PM PST #

I'm very excited to see this new language. The fact that you're using it to drive Java out of the box as a first feature instead of being a possibility later is a huge plus. Keep us posted!

Is it possible to put up a JNLP version of the flash demos? If java can be morphed to do nice looking guis, F3 is worth it :) How about data binding, any good at that? Is this a 'graphics' language or can it be used for general purpose programming?

Posted by falcon on November 10, 2006 at 07:35 PM PST #

Is this interpreted, compiled to bytecode, compiled to Java, or what? How is the performance? Glad to see projects like this coming out of Sun--Cheers, Patrick

Posted by Patrick Wright on November 11, 2006 at 07:36 AM PST #

Looks neat. How tightly coupled is F3 to Swing? How easy would it be to replace the component set with another (perhaps custom) one? For example, how applicable is this work to Java-enabled handsets? (J2ME) Related: OpenLazlo, which can already generate a version of Flash that is compatible with some handsets, will be adding J2ME compatibility in the future.

Posted by Joe Bowbeer on November 11, 2006 at 11:48 AM PST #

falcon: Done.

Patrick: It's interpreted, currently. Once its on Java.net and we feel the language syntax has stabilized one of my goals is to experiment with translating to Java byte code.

Joe Bowbeer: F3 the language doesn't require Swing, however all of the current GUI support is tightly coupled to AWT/Swing. The F3 canvas is a Swing JComponent.

I personally hate embedded systems development and therefore don't have an interest in JavaME. In addition, I don't find it interesting to develop gui's for a viewport 175-200 pixels in size. However, as I understand it, would probably be easy to use F3 in Java ME CDC. It wouldn't be possible on CLDC.

Chris, F3 sounds impressive, and I look forward to seeing a live demo and hearing more about the non-graphical parts of the language, such as any data binding model you might have. But since you took the time and effort to copy the design and all of the SWF assets out of the OpenLaszlo Amazon sample app (http://www.openlaszlo.org/demos#Amazon) and re-use them in your F3 demo, I think it would be polite to do more than just blindly link directly to our demo and actually take the time to give credit to us for designing and building that demo in the first place. (OpenLaszlo is open source, so of course you are welcome to re-use the assets.) In addition, describing an OpenLaszlo app as a 'Flash program' is misleading and only captures a slice of OpenLaszlo's cross-runtime nature (see particularly http://www.openlaszlo.org/legals, but you might also be interested in http://www.openlaszlo.org/orbit).

Posted by Jim Grandy on November 12, 2006 at 08:39 AM PST #

Hi Jim,

I am not a UI designer (no art skills). I chose the Laszlo Amazon demo precisely because of its beautiful graphics (obviously done by someone with real art skills) for which all the credit goes to openlazlo.org.

I personally think the Laszlo application is an impressive example and that's why I wanted to see how hard it would be to do the same thing in F3.

So please take this as a compliment to the capabilities of openlaszlo and not in any way a slight.

Borland VCL??? на Borland VCL ни в коем случае! Is there only one way to place components using point coordinates? How about swing layout managers?

Posted by Igor Artamonov on November 12, 2006 at 08:46 PM PST #

I've been doing something somewhat similar in Java, to the extent that it's possible in Java's syntax. See AutoBuild for an example...the same sorts of nested structures are used.

Posted by Ross Judson on November 13, 2006 at 01:11 PM PST #

I am not happly with the Swing, due to the verbosity it brings with. F3, I am positive, I like it. May be over a period of time F3 may evolve to support multiple GUI frameworks than just Java based ones.

Posted by Syamala Tadigadapa on November 16, 2006 at 02:36 AM PST #

Java has no share in desktop OS. If F3 needs JVM, users have to download a JVM, it's not convenient. So I think it's future is not bright. It is only a policy of Sun to compete with Microsoft, which has XAML GUI programming language based on .Net platform.

Iam Swing Developer and I want to know how to do programming in F3.How can I get F3, will it be a part of JDK release.Help me.

Posted by HC on November 20, 2006 at 07:53 AM PST #

Chris,

This is an amazing piece of work! I'm super-impressed! Really, well done!

Now... you mentioned that you personally have no interest in Java ME! That's cool! However, Java ME is important to Sun. I think your CEO has said on more than one occasion that most of the world will experience the Internet through a mobile handset.

You talk about F3 being a potential competitor to Flash. The truth is, if you seriously want to compete with Flash, you need to compete in the mobile/embedded space too. I was blogging about Java ME vs Flash Lite just the other day:

http://www.psynixis.com/blog/2006/11/11/java-on-the-next-billion-devices-will-history-repeat-itself/

A CDC version of F3 could be a great way to start "F3-Lite" on Java ME... especially if it turns out to be as "easy" to get working as you hope; although the the Java ME mass market is clearly still with CLDC.

Just want to say, that I'm not in anyway wanting to suggest that you get involved with an "F3 Lite". I'm just suggesting it could potentially valuable for Sun - and I'd have thought it's worth someone at least looking at the opportunity.

Hi Chris, looks like a good deal of work. I have two comments: \* F3 is not a good name. Too short, can't be searched on the Internet. Because, search engines regularly don't index words with less than three characters. \* While the graphics look impressive. I'm missing the elegance and integration into browsers and the desktop. I think the current desire is to create applications that have an (almost) identical online and offline user Interface. I don't see that happening with Java Applets, nor with Java Jump start. \*\* Java Applets are a pain in the neck in terms of integration and start-up characteristics. See the behavior of my Plan-B for OpenOffice.org applet in Firefox or IE . It blocks everything (rendering, etc.) until it is done. \*\* Java JumpStart is nice for installing applications locally, but you can't always do that (computer of a friend, office, library, etc.). Hence you need a web based interface. And I don't want to write two interfaces for the same app. \* The other part I'm missing is the elegance of widgets. The frameless windows in particular. Can one get rid of these? Kind regards, K

I wrote an experimental library (far from being complete) for JRuby using Swing inspired by F3 see my site.

Posted by Jean Lazarou on January 19, 2007 at 02:50 PM PST #

I'd like to respond to the commenter who said that Java has no share of the Desktop OS and that if user's have to download the JVM then f3 doesn't have a bright future. This perception is frozen in time from something like 1999. Quite to the contrary, surveys including this one (http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/flashplayer) from Adobe, shows that 87% off all browsers tested in the survey contain the JRE plugin. Flash obviously leads with 96%, but still 87% is a huge market penetration. This was a multi-country survey with 1000 samples taken in the US alone. Given the high penetration of Java, I don't think f3 will have any problems. Just thought I'd correct what appears to be a very common and resilient misconception.

I am continually amazed at the next generation of IT professionals. I herald from the 1976 era of Assembly Language Programmers. I have work with virtually all the programming languages and databases, and 4GL tools. When I see Java, I am amazed at how ancient it is and how far behind it is in the world of development tools. However, since generations of techicians appear every 3-5 years, it is so simple to evangelize another set of code groupies. Please, rail your disagreements and try to beat down the comment. There are a number of experienced people that know that Powerhouse was the leading container based programming tool. Java is a budding look-alike, with roots in HP's CISC based SPL intrinsics. Few know that Microsoft and Oracle learned from Cognos in the early l990's. They stole away the collaborative information and spawned new, crappy tools for you and I to debug. Cognos withdrew from that collaboration. A new direction for Cognos BI tools emerged and the 4GL that is really the only functional 4GL ever on the market, has been behind the effort. The Marketing and Finance majors won the rat race. Java has 10 years to go to begin the dawning of the level of Powerhouse. I know you hate that, and because you and your personality are co-dependent on the Java technology platform in order for you to experience the mental mastubation necessary for you to hold an identity, I expect that you will fight hard inside the paper bag of technical gurus who emerge because they wrote some words down and some new generation of buyers said, it is so!

How does web application development improve? 1) F3 eliminates web browser? 2) Return to Applets?

Posted by Ivan Samuel on May 09, 2007 at 04:15 AM PDT #

You're web application will send JavaFX pages instead of HTML + js. Browser will need FX plugin in order to render. Most probably you will not be able to send custom java classes, because, yes, it will be awfully close to applets.

Posted by Andrey on May 10, 2007 at 10:02 AM PDT #

I see your point denka. Google however can search within pdf and word documents (for example try to search "complete form W-4"), I don't see why it can not index JavaFX pages.

Posted by Andrey on May 12, 2007 at 04:38 PM PDT #

Denka, You make a valid point which I am well aware of. However, the search engines are already broken by Flash, Silverlight, and also by AJAX in the same way. I actually believe this will become a very serious problem for Google and others. However, when I spoke to people at Google about it, they currently showed no interest in trying to solve it.

import f3.ui.\*
import f3.ui.canvas.\*;
import f3.ui.filter.\*;
Canvas {
content: Text {
x: 20
y: 20
content: "Welcome to F3"
font: Font { face: VERDANA, style: [ITALIC, BOLD], size: 80 }
fill: LinearGradient {
x1: 0, y1: 0, x2: 0, y2: 1
stops:
[Stop {
offset: 0
color: blue
},
Stop {
offset: 0.5
color: dodgerblue
},
Stop {
offset: 1
color: blue
}]
}
filter: [Glow {amount: 0.1}, Noise {monochrome: true, distribution: 0}]
}
}

Did I make a mistake somewhere that you could see? Or is there some sort of problem that is not showing up? Anyways, welcome to Sun!

You're web application will send JavaFX pages instead of HTML + js. Browser will need FX plugin in order to render. Most probably you will not be able to send custom java classes, because, yes, it will be awfully close to applets.

Just want to say, that I'm not in anyway wanting to suggest that you get involved with an "F3 Lite". I'm just suggesting it could potentially valuable for Sun - and I'd have thought it's worth someone at least looking at the opportunity

It’s almost over, but last night Palin’s speech did a job. She showed the Nation, she could make a strong leader - great vice-president candidate, but how come they’re not focusing on McCain now? What about him? He didn’t lead by 20 points… so they better start focusing on him. She’s already set.

You're web application will send JavaFX pages instead of HTML + js. Browser will need FX plugin in order to render. Most probably you will not be able to send custom java classes, because, yes, it will be awfully close to applets.

For too long, the American people have experienced a culture of secrecy in Washington, where information is locked up, taxpayer dollars disappear without a trace, and lobbyists wield undue influence. For Americans, business as usual in Washington has reinforced the belief that the government benefits the special interests and the well connected at the expense of the American people. But President Obama committed to change the way Washington works. And he has begun to do just thankyou
