I've a minipc Qotom Q1900G2-P with AlmaLinux 9.5.
Qotom with American Megatrends bios, build 06.01.2015.
Bios reset to factory, default setup.

Without video cable, HDMI or VGA, it doesn't start...from dmesg or syslog or message NOTHING!
It seems that even get to the grub menu but obviously not having video connected I do not see until the boot comes. If I connect the video later, with the minipc on, no video signal.
Same with Debian 12.10.

OK with Windows!! :(( With Windows it start also without video cable!

I've trie to insert in /etc/default/grub some options as:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset console=tty1"
or
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset text"

But nothing! :((

Any ideas for solve? Thanks in advance

  • How do you determine whether it starts or not? Sounds more like the issue is that you don't get a video signal if you connect a video cable after the machine has booted. Does the OS start a X or wayland server upon boot?CommentedApr 22 at 9:20
  • Does the machine have a serial port to which you could send the console? Can you reach it over the network (ping, ssh)?CommentedApr 22 at 9:21
  • I would also configure it to boot to console mode only, rather than bring up a gui.CommentedApr 22 at 9:27

    @StéphaneChazelas The machine has an ssh server and after the power on with the video cable disconnected, I do not reach it with the ping nor with ssh. Also, as I wrote above, I checked the system logs. If for example I start the machine at 10.30 with video cable everything ok. I turn it off, at 10.35 I start with the video cable disconnected and turn it off after a few minutes. At 10.45 the boot with video cable and check the logs. From 10.30 to 10.45 there is no sign of boot.CommentedApr 22 at 9:27

    Some EFI implementations behave wonky when no display is connected. The Windows bootloader seems to be able to handle it in your case, but GRUB might not. Did you consider using a HDMI dummy plug (also known as "headless" or "ghost" plug)? It is rather cheap and saves you a lot of headache.

SOLVED!

I fixed the problem by changing the setting in the BIOS as shown in the screenshot below:
Boot > Boot OS Selection > UEFI Win7

I have read that UEFI Win8 setting is less permissive in some respects, especially for headless boot.

Thank you all.
