@NicolasHug@cmarmo@jnothman@lesteve I think this is a pretty nice improvement to search. It shows all the API results, and limits the context based search to 5 items. There is a limit to 5 because each result must GET the entire page before loading. (If it is not cached) The API results do not need to fetch anything, so it is does not increase network access when displaying all of them. |
Do you want it in the release or can this wait a bit? |
6 months with search working not as good, does not seem good. I would be okay if this can be a bug fix on the docs. |

This is rather decorrelated from the release since it's documentation only. Whether we merge it not or later it would need to be backported to the stable branch anyway.
So I tried to test this will still the same "SGD" query,
- https://scikit-learn.org/dev/search.html?q=SGD yields 10 results
- This PR, https://83048-843222-gh.circle-artifacts.com/0/doc/search.html?q=SGD yield 7 results
In this example, I don't think that capping the documentation results to 5 is good. Keeping it to 10 might be better. I wouldn't worry about Ajax requests too much, they should be cached by the Github CDN (and likely the browser) anyway. This Github webpage makes 45 HTTP requests for instance, while search on scikit-learn.org with 10 responses, makes 30 HTTP calls. I think it's better to wait a couple of seconds rather than miss some search results..

Is this strictly necessary? I we can minimize the divergence from the upstream version I think it would be good.

This can be it’s own separate PR. This was updated to match IMG tags with newlines.
Okay updated PR to have 10 again. |
Why does the XHR retrieve the .html rather than the .rst file?? |

Not checked the code logic in detail, but from user experience side it does seems to work.
I any case, there might be an opportunity to improve sphinx search, but we can do at any moment in the future, independently of the release schedule since it's documentation only.
And we don't have a client side ReST parser?! I shouldn't tempt you, should I, @thomasjpfan? ;) |
I did try to look for a JavaScript rst parser and was not successful. ;) |

This PR adds includes all the API results in the search results and caps the number of results from other sources (such as the user guide) to 5. The results from the other sources will make another HTTP request to get the context. On the other hand, the API results do not make these request, so there is no reason to cap them. As a result of this PR, all the matching classes and functions from the API will be displayed in search.
