How frequently is it updated?

The Ballotpedia database is constantly maintained and updated by our staff, as much of the content we use on Ballotpedia.org is based on this dataset.

We have some specific internal timelines for key events (subject to change):

• For federal and state races, we update the candidate lists in our database within a week after the official candidate lists are published by each state (per the state’s filing deadlines). Note: A state’s filing deadline may pass without a candidate list being released. This delay can last anywhere from a few days to more than a month. Candidate list timelines for local elections vary based on data availability, but those candidates are typically added within one month after the list becomes available. At certain periods of time (particularly odd-numbered years), this may happen significantly faster. We do not guarantee a certain coverage speed for local candidate lists.
• Other events related to candidates and current officeholders at the congressional, statewide and state legislative levels, such as retirements and deaths, are typically updated within a week.
• Election results begin to be updated the night of the election, and are typically available within 1 business day for state and federal races, though local election results may take longer to become available in some cases. There also may be a delay of up to 1 additional day for some state races on major election nights as we work through updating thousands of races.
• Certified vote totals: We work to upload certified vote totals within six months of the election. We prioritize certifying federal election results first, then state election results, and finally local election results.
• Mapping data relevant to Geographic API customers is added for local subdivisions (city council wards, school board divisions, etc.) on a rolling basis prior to election dates, but varies based on data availability.

What are your sources?

Ballotpedia's staff research and compile the data from a variety of sources, including Secretary of State's offices, county election offices, news outlets, and the candidates or officeholders themselves. We collect from official sources wherever possible.
