Someone wants to promote a new image format and wants to use Slashdot as a shill? Probably. There usually isn't a good reason to put multi spectral data in the same file. The file gets too big. I've only seen it done in NITF files.

You are right. This is a solution in search of a customer. I hear a lot about the company Boom. and I suspect it is because they spend a lot of $ on public relations and marketing. I doubt the airline industry takes them seriously.

I'd like to know the answer too. I lived in the area for a decade. Here are some possible factors. Land is extremely cheap there. Local governments and state power regulators are very friendly to big businesses. When I lived there the data center projects were kind of a bust. They didn't pull in many new jobs. They consumed tons of fresh water. The microsoft data center at Mesa just ran water over the regulator and let it evaporate. There was no closed loop.

I'd like to know the answer too.

GIMP is the poster child for highly capable open source software that is madingly difficult to use. About once every five years I try again to learn how to use it. After a could of days I realize that nothing I want to accomplish is worth the month of study, practice, and experimentation it would take to become proficient.

  It's easy to find college classes and enrichment classes that teach you how to use Photoshop. It's impossible to find one that teaches you how to use GIMP. That says a lot right there.
