"When did you find out?"
"Well, you're wearing the same ring as Largo."
"It's a ring I like to wear."

The SPECTRE ring was a bespoke signet ring worn by members of the secretive criminal organization, SPECTRE. The item first appeared in the 1963James Bond film From Russia with Love and variants were used in Thunderball (1965) and You Only Live Twice (1967). The ring was later re-invented for the Daniel Craig continuity of James Bond films, appearing in 2015's Spectre.

More subtle than its classic continuity counterpart, the version seen in the modern continuity is a simple silver ring, with the SPECTRE octopus insignia etched onto the surface. The ring was worn (usually palm-side down to obscure the mark) by high-ranking operatives and was used as a means of covert identification. Assassin Marco Sciarra wore one such ring, which James Bond pried from his finger before the man fell to his death. Using portable forensic analysis equipment, Q later determined that the ring was connected with several antagonists 007 had faced previously. He discovered three fingerprints on the ring - Sciarra, White (who held the ring in Austria) and a partial unknown print. Further analyzing the latter, he found DNA belonging to Franz Oberhauser and traces of Reidite. Reidite is a very rare mineral related to zircon and is commonly associated with meteorite impacts. Sifting through post-mortem data, traces of Reidite was also found in the toxicology reports of Silva, Le Chiffre, Greene and Sciarra; suggesting that all four wore similar signet rings at some point. Trivia[]

  • Rings have been used since antiquity as spy identification and in espionage. During World War II, US Air Force personnel would privately purchase signet rings with a hidden compartment that would hold small compass or hidden message. MI9 purchased a number of signet rings from Regent Street jewelers that were used to conceal compasses.[2]
