COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A Columbus restaurant owner is feeling the impact of the ‘Spiderweb’ construction closing down multiple roads in East Columbus.

The Spiderweb is a busy intersection consisting of five roads and a railroad track. Crews are building a bridge over the train tracks to alleviate congestion.

“I think this should’ve been planned better. You see I’m busting a U-turn. This is a nuisance though,” said Marcus Powell, a driver in the area.

Powell was in the middle of turning around or making a U-turn near Buena Vista Road and Morris Road where the construction is underway when News Leader 9 stopped to ask him about the closures. This spot is also the location of Morris Hot Dogs and Nachos.

“I just hope that I can just be here when it’s all over and still serve the people,” owner Ronald Carthar said. “My lunch crowd I don’t have them anymore because you don’t have but 30 minutes... it takes 30 minutes to come all the way around.”

Carther has been at the location for nearly 40 years- once a hair salon then as a restaurant- but now business is slow.

“I’ve saw this area thrive in some ways, and I saw it lose a lot. We had a couple of service station, we had a laundromat, and we also had a barber shop,” he said “This is a community, and we’ve lost that. The only thing is left now is Morris Roads Hot Dogs and Nachos and KFC.”

“KFC, him, the (tire) shop across the street... I feel bad for them man,” said Powell.

“It’s bittersweet for me because this is my livelihood, but I’m also enthused about it because I’ve seen people actually probably lost their life because the train was on the tracks, an ambulance couldn’t get by. I’ve seen several times since I’ve been here all this time the firetrucks had to turn around because the train was on the tracks,” Carthar said.

According him, he spoke to city council Tuesday, and since then, he said State Rep. Teddy Reese and Councilor Byron Hickey have came to hear him out.

“It’s a street called Ace Way right there. If they just open that back up we can get some relief down here, and maybe I can get my customers back,” Carthar said.

Although he can’t do much about the . closures, he left a message for drivers turn around in his driveway to proceed with caution.

“I like for them to slow down, look out for the kids, and don’t speed,” Carther stated.

Carther’s restaurant is still open for business. The suggested route is to take Forrest Road then travel all the way to Morris Road where you will see his business.

The address to his restaurant is 564 Morris Road Columbus, GA 31906.

KFC is still open and encourages people to stop by. The Exhaust Pro auto shop on Andrews Road has closed temporarily because of the construction and is redirecting customers to Auto Masters Repair on Fortson Road.
