JFD investigating string of fires
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - There have been a string of fires in the capital city as of late.
On Monday, the Jackson Fire Department talked to WLBT 3 On Your Side to give us more information.
In the past week, there was a fire on Stillwood Drive and a structure fire on Highway 80 and Valley Street.
A fire also occurred on Thursday at an abandoned doctor’s office on Chadwick Drive. Then, on Sunday night, a house went up in flames on Lakewood Drive in South Jackson.
Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Armon said officials believe the last two were caused by homeless vagrants trying to keep warm.
“They’ll make a determination as to how that fire started, but I can say that it was suspected that it could possibly be someone in that home trying to keep warm,” said Armon. “But to be concrete, I’m not to that point yet.”
According to Armon, the doctor’s office is a bigger area with multiple floors that collapsed on each other, so they wanted to go back and search the area.
Monday afternoon, officials went back to the scene of the fire on Chadwick Drive with cadaver dogs, combing through debris to make sure no evidence was left behind.
The Jackson Fire Department is working to find answers. They ask that you practice using safety precautions to avoid causing a fire that can cause major damage or injure someone.
