Dollar General arson suspect allegedly told police he set fire after ‘argument with girlfriend’
AUSTIN, In. (WAVE) - A man arrested Sunday for setting fire to a Dollar General Market in Austin, Indiana, told police he did it after an argument with his girlfriend, online court records show.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by WAVE News, Jalen May, 19, was arrested for the fire about an hour after it consumed the Dollar General Market on US 31 in Austin.
The responding officer says in the affidavit that May was standing outside the store when he first responded to the fire at 7:40 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9. May allegedly approached the officer and told him that he saw a “skinny female” in the area of the store where the fire started.
May originally told police he saw the girl running from the scene along US 31 after the fire broke out.
However, shortly after the interview, another witness told the officer that he “needed to talk to Jalen,” because she saw May in the area where the fire started “acting weird.”
Then, another person in law enforcement approached the officer to tell him that he heard May say to a deputy that “he knew he was going back to jail” because he was on probation.
After the two witness statements, the officer approached May again. This time, May allegedly confessed to setting the fire and agreed to an on-the-record interview.
During the police interview, May told officers that “he got into an argument with his girlfriend and got mad.” For some reason, May says that led him to the Dollar General Market to set the fire, so that he could “break his probation.”
May told police he set toilet paper and paper towels on fire with a BIC lighter. Then, he allegedly set fire to a dog bed, before running and ditching the lighter in the front lawn of the store.
The affidavit says officers located the lighter which was photographed and said “Keep on flick’n” on it.
When police asked May what happened at the Scott County Jail, May told them he “had gotten pissed off and does dumb stuff when he’s pissed off.” May told police he made sure no children were in the store before setting the fire.
The interview was over by 8:45 p.m., and May was booked shortly after. May’s girlfriend was also contacted by police, and she backed up the story about their argument, although she couldn’t give any reason why May allegedly wanted to take out his rage on a Dollar General store.
May is currently facing charges of arson and criminal mischief resulting in damage of $50,000 or greater.
