SCOTTSBURG, Ind. (WAVE) - The City of Scottsburg isn’t all that big. Its population is just over 8,000 according to Mayor Terry Amick.

However, its proximity to the interstate and its location inside the path of total darkness has the small town primed for visitors.

Small businesses are hoping for a few more patrons. Java Express, a coffee shop on the town square, for example, is offering eclipse-themed drinks and food for those coming on or around April 8.

ElementNull, a gaming store nearby is hoping for some extra foot traffic as well.

Mayor Amick said all 17 of the city’s police officers will be on duty making sure families who decide to come visit can stay safe.

The city is hosting their own event here at Mid America Science Park on South Lake Road with food vendors and a place to park cars and lay down blankets.

Amick is inviting anyone from Louisville or parts of Southern Indiana who aren’t in the path of totality.

”If you want to get a taste of it, come on up here,” said Amick. “Dine at our restaurants, just watch and have a good time with family.”

If you do plan on attending the city event, it starts at noon. The eclipse will happen around 3:07 p.m. If all goes to plan, they hope to have everyone out a little after 4 p.m.
