How CableMES works:

CableMES acts as a conduit between the shop floor and your business. It harnesses extensive industry knowledge and assists cable manufacturers to better monitor, manage and control the entire production process.

CableMES incorporates AVEVA™ System Platform scalability to enable data acquisition through the cost-effective connection to any compatible shop floor device. The software also easily integrates with your business’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and conducts real-time data transfers in a bidirectional manner. This keeps your business and shop floor always working in coordination.

In addition, CableMES integrates seamlessly into CableBuilder Enterprise, UL Solutions' cable design software. This combination enables all manufacturing data for product, process, and machine to transfer between the two systems automatically, helping to instantly confirm that products are produced to the correct specification.

Both CableMES and CableBuilder Enterprise can also run independently. One does not need the other to function properly.

CableMES benefits and capabilities

Operational enhancements

Thanks to real-time production information and automatic data capture capabilities, CableMES can quickly highlight operational anomalies using alarming systems that empower the operator to take immediate action when resolving issues. For example, if a machine is running below its target production speed, the system instantly alerts the operator. The captured data also helps management to analyze trends across product groups, process types, shift formations and production shift patterns. This enables process improvement while boosting overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

CableMES tracks stock movement and availability through barcodes, allowing “at a glance” visibility. It also confirms accurate stock management by location or item while enabling complete traceability of raw materials.

Simple planning and scheduling

The CableMES system is flexible enough to allow last-minute adjustments to lengths and adages, and enables planners to plan common items in a single manufacturing batch. CableMES also provides planners with the tools, information and control they need to accurately plan. Operators can then schedule planned jobs, using easy-to-interpret interactive drag-and-drop scheduling boards.

Quality control improvements

CableMES injects quality control across the entire product manufacturing life cycle, from planning to analysis of quality losses to traceability and nonconformance management, and to data recording.

CableMES helps businesses minimize errors by preventing the use of improper raw materials. Mistakes are immediately highlighted and made visible to both operators and management. Once the system identifies an error, CableMES prevents the malfunctioning reel or drum from progressing any further and from tainting downstream production processes.

Augmented performance

Each aspect of the wire and cable manufacturing process must meet specific requirements (like day-to-day sequencing of production orders or long-term analysis) to maintain overall OEE.

CableMES uses a powerful historian tool provided by AVEVA™, which collects all wire and cable manufacturing process data produced (even down to the granularity level of exact cable lengths). Users can correlate this data to process and quality alarms, thereby identifying trends and providing long-term benchmarks.

The CableMES historian tool combination offers a wealth of reporting features that provide management with a comprehensive strategic view of the business.

Digital transformation-ready tools

As the cable manufacturing industry transitions to smart factories, the importance of digitized tools increases. Systems like CableMES software more effectively manage resources by factoring in expected delivery dates, length of cable required, availability of stock and manufacturing production capabilities. The system also automatically generates production orders when linked to the ERP system. CableMES also monitors and tracks products through the entire manufacturing life cycle and confirms that staff members are processing orders on time and to specified cost while also identifying hidden production capacity.

CableMES helps stakeholders to adopt essential smart factory automation practices and establish a fully synced and integrated system to simplify and optimize operations. The improved integrity and accuracy of data, superior operator progress reporting and automatic production line data collection all serve to validate smooth operations and minimize operator interaction.
