Opening Keynote – Chelle Honiker: Stories That Reflect and Reveal: How Books Shape Identity and Understanding

Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop introduced the idea that books serve as mirrors, reflecting our own experiences; windows, offering a glimpse into the lives of others; and sliding glass doors, inviting us to step into new perspectives. Stories have the power to validate our identities, expand our understanding, and build empathy across differences. In this keynote, we’ll explore how the books we read shape not only how we see ourselves but also how we connect with the world—why we need both familiar and unfamiliar narratives, and how storytelling can be a transformative force in our lives.

Because in a world that seems hell-bent on divisiveness and conflict, your storytelling and writing skills have never been more important, or more needed. Books and stories are ultimately about connections and you, the creative scribe, play a fundamental role in helping create and bridge these connections.
