GUIDE Youth Advisory Board
Open to Gwinnett County high school students (rising 9th - rising 12th)
An initiative of GUIDE, the Youth Advisory Board is a group of high school students from across Gwinnett County who come together to learn leadership skills, provide input to various aspects of GUIDE programming and conduct substance abuse prevention projects. Our YAB members are committed to positively impacting the community, as well as making responsible and healthy personal choices. Throughout the school year, YAB members participate in monthly meetings and help plan things like youth leadership training, community-wide events and peer prevention campaigns designed to reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.
YAB members develop and practice critical leadership skills such as public speaking, group management, networking, decision-making, planning, organization and time management. Former YAB members have gone on to serve in prestigious leadership positions in other organizations and on their college campuses, receive full scholarships to colleges of their choice, lead their fellow youth in community organizing activities and have been selected to serve as interns and paid summer staff for GUIDE.
Applications are due Friday, May 5.
Contact the YAB Coordinator, Anastasia Frimpong, with any questions.
The GCPS Book Mobile brings the library to our students during the summer! This decked-out school bus travels to different apartment complexes and neighborhoods each week throughout the summer and helps prevent the "summer slide" by providing kids with high-quality, diverse books.
The annual Book Mobile 5K is the only fundraiser that contributes to this cause. This year, the 5K is on Saturday, May 6th at 8:00 am at the ISC. Early-bird registration is $25 for the 5K and $18 for the Fun Run. Groups of 4 get the family discount and pay only $90. (Everyone under 18 receives a FREE BOOK to add to their home library!)
If you can't make it on race day, you can also choose to do the virtual 5K to receive your t-shirt in the mail, or, just donate to the cause! (A $100 donation gets your name added to the back of the t-shirt!)
Don't forget to mention McClure Health Science High School when you register! The school with the most registrations gets a FREE visit from the Book Mobile!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email Laura Sly at laura.sly@gcpsk12.org.
