What is the Local School Council?
The A+ Education Reform Act of 2000 established school councils in Georgia to “bring communities and schools closer together in a spirit of cooperation to achieve the following:
- solve difficult education problems
- improve academic achievement
- provide support for teachers and administrators
- bring parents into the school-based decision-making process
School councils provide advice, recommendations, and assistance to principals and local boards of education. The law details the composition of the council, its responsibilities, and procedures for conducting business.
At a minimum, a School Council is composed of seven members, including the following:
- The Principal
- Two certificated teachers elected by the teachers
- Four parents (or guardians) elected by the parents (please list as “Parent”); two of the parents must be businesspersons
- The school council may, within its bylaws, increase the number of members, as long as the parents remain the majority.
International Literacy Day
Wednesday, September 8th is International Literacy Day, a celebration of the importance of literacy worldwide. To celebrate, each MHSHS student will have the opportunity to choose a brand new book to take home as part of the GCPS Book Mobile program. Students will pick out books during their language arts class on September 8th and September 9th.
Here are some other ways you can celebrate International Literacy Day (all month long) in your classroom or with your families!
Ask students about the book they chose. Or, talk to them about what you're reading. Having an adult model the act of lifelong reading can be extremely beneficial!
Read a book aloud. High school students love to be read to, too! You can read one of the books available from the media center, or check out these classic children's books from the Library of Congress.
Learn about these 5 Literacy Heroes from History
Letters About Literature. Kids of all ages can write a letter to their favorite author. (The contest was discontinued in 2019, but you can still see the winners from previous years.)
Listen to an author. Watch an author book reading or interview from TeachingBooks.net.

GCPS Parent Resources
We know that families want easy access and one, go-to location for need-to-know information about their student's education— from records to resources. Just as important, you want an easy way to stay in touch with the school. The Updated Parent Portal gives parents access to grades, assignments, and communication with teachers. The Parent Portal gives families a direct line to the classroom, with 24/7 real-time information and anytime, anywhere access, with in-portal translation in multiple languages. And that's just the beginning...
Masks in GCPS
In late July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), updated its guidance for schools, recommending that children, teachers, and others in K-12 schools across the nation wear masks this school year, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. This recommendation is in line with those of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Based on this guidance and for the safety of our students, staff, and visitors, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) requires the wearing of masks or cloth face coverings in our schools and facilities and on school buses, regardless of vaccination status.
The CDC indicates correct and consistent mask use is a critical step everyone can take to prevent getting and spreading COVID-19. Masks work best when everyone wears them, but not all masks provide the same protection. With that in mind, Gwinnett County Public Schools requires masks to:
- Fully cover the nose and mouth and secure under the chin.
- Fit securely against both sides of the face.
Masks that have an exhalation valve or vent and masks made from mesh fabrics are not recommended by the CDC as they allow virus particles to escape and spread. As a result, these types of masks do not meet GCPS’ mask requirement.
Gwinnett County Public Schools is using the most recent CDC guidance and information about transmission and case rates within our community as part of its decision-making process regarding mitigation efforts. The district will continue to monitor current conditions and updates to guidance, using this information to make changes to its mask requirement and other mitigation strategies during the 2021–22 school year as needed.
