Eight million is a big number, and if Amazon sold that many Kindles in 2010, it will have sold two or three times as many as it had sold in all the years before, and almost as many Kindles as Apple has sold iPads. The number is unconfirmed by Amazon itself, but Bloomberg is reporting that it's what "two people who are aware of the company’s sales projections" are saying could be the final number.
There's definitely a good Kindle vibe in the air. I know a lot of people who are diving in, thanks to that $139 price point. There's no strong competitor with a better price, and there's definitely none with a better overall platform. If there ever was a season for Kindles, this is it.
All Amazon will say, via a Dec. 13 Facebook wall post, is that "in just the first 73 days of this holiday quarter, we’ve already sold millions of our all-new Kindles." Some analysts were guessing 5 million, according to AllThingsD's Peter Kafka, but even that was seen as bullish.
We gave Amazon an opportunity to respond to this, but would be surprised if they did. At some point, however, Amazon will have to cut out the nonsense and 'fess up to a number. So, Amazon? Is it 8 million? Why not make it an even 10 million? Dare you take it to ... 11?
