Missed out on some great — and not-so-great — deals on Amazon Prime Day? Don't worry, there’s always next year. Amazon says its first Prime Day on Wednesday was such a whopping success that the one-day-sale event will be back in 2016 … and probably many more years to come. Greg Greeley, vice president of Amazon Prime, said the discount sales day attracted "hundreds of thousands" of new Prime members, who pay $99 a year in return for benefits like free two-day shipping and free streaming of some movies and TV shows.

Despite online rumblings by some disgruntled shoppers that Prime Day was nothing more than an overhyped "garage sale," Greeley said the event was a definitive success.

Greeley said customers ordered 398 items per second, and worldwide orders increased 266 percent over the same day last year and 18 percent more than Black Friday 2014. "Going into this, we weren't sure whether Prime Day would be a one-time thing or if it would become an annual event. After yesterday’s results, we'll definitely be doing this again," he said in a statement Thursday.

Amazon said assorted Prime Day hot-sellers included several of its own electronic devices — Five TV sticks, Fire tablets, Echos — as well as televisions, "Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy" sets, Bose headphones … and the unrated edition of "Fifty Shades of Grey" on Blu-ray.
