Apple sells 100 million iPod Touch players, adds slightly cheaper $229 model

After selling over 100 million iPod Touch devices since 2007, Apple has added a slightly more budget-friendly version of the phoneless iPhone to its lineup.

The new iPod Touch is a 16GB model priced at $229. It will offer a 4-inch Retina display, a dual-core A5 processor and a front-facing camera. The new iPod touch is as slender as its kin — it's a quarter-inch thick. But unlike its pricier counterparts (32GB for $299; 64GB for $399), the new model is missing the rear-facing 5-megapixel camera — it just has a lower-resolution front-facing FaceTime HD camera.

If you don't mind the fact that it won't take the place of a point-and-shoot camera — or are looking for a nice gift for someone who won't mind — this new iPod's a good option. According to a report released by data-crunching firm Nielsen at the end of 2012, the iPod Touch was among the most wanted gifts at the time among youngsters. Thirty-six percent of children between the ages of six and twelve wanted to get their hands on one of the music players, so your youngsters might be glad to see it as well.

The new iPod Touch is only available in a black-and-silver combo at this point, so you're out of luck if you're itching to save a little money on one of the more colorful ones. At this time, it will ship within 24 hours, and will be available in Apple's brick-and-mortar stores starting on May 31.
