29 buttons and a joystick? Now THAT'S a game controller

It's nearly impossible to convince avid PC gamers that there is any gaming input more accurate and efficient than a good ol' keyboard and mouse.

But it seems maybe ... just maybe ... "StarCraft II" enthusiast and industrial design student Mauricio Romano has crafted a controller to win even the most devout PC enthusiast's heart.

Romano designed the controller -- which has 29 buttons and "joystick mouse" -- as part of the StarCraft II Stick Ultimate Build-Off challenge run by game blog Shoryuken. It tasked fans of real-time strategy games to build a controller inspired by the kind crafted for fighting games.

You can check out the controller creation process here. And you can get a close-up look at the controller's highlights here.

Oh, and check it out in action right here:

OK, so it has a few drawbacks.

"I can't actually type, because it doesn't have an enter button," Romano says as he takes it for a test drive.

Perhaps that keyboard and mouse are just fine after all.
