Google announced a brand new design for Android at its I/O developer conference Wednesday, intended to replicate the look of layered paper — and as you can see in the image above, the difference is striking.
On stage, the presenter showed the evolution of the Gmail app from its old form to the new one. Google emphasized the fluidity of animations and the subtle sense of depth provided by shadows.
The other Google apps and interfaces have been updated as well, of course, from notifications to the calendar. You can watch a video showing the new look in motion, or peruse the philosophy and guidelines for designers at the Google Design page.
