Smart home device maker Nest showed off its latest creation at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday: a wireless security camera called the Cam. It's a small, wide-angle camera that you can access from your smartphone, and that sends alerts if it detects motion — much like a Dropcam, which should come as no surprise since Google-owned Nest bought that company last year for $555 million.

The Nest Cam doesn't do much that Dropcam or its competitors don't, but it does integrate with other Nest systems in the house and on your phone. You'll be able to view Cam's footage from the Nest app, save that footage to the cloud with a Nest Aware subscription, and have the device turn on if your Nest Protect carbon monoxide detector smells trouble. And of course the usual Dropcam capabilities apply, too: listen and talk through the camera, use night vision, set up a timelapse, and so on.
Those other products got a few small changes of their own at the event: the Protect is now smaller and lasts longer, and software updates are rolling out to it and the Nest thermostat. The Cam is available to order today directly from Nest or any number of online retailers.
