In the wake of the negative reaction to the latest version of Final Cut Pro (X), Apple has resumed sales of its previous edition of its popular Final Cut Studio video editing bundle.
But don't get your hopes up.
This doesn't mean they're bringing it back. Apple told CNET the program is still discontinued, but "as we've done before with many end-of-life software products, we have a limited quantity of Final Cut Studio still available through Apple telesales to customers who need them for ongoing projects."
The legacy bundle includes Final Cut Pro 7, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, DVD Studio Pro 4, Color 1.5 and Compressor 3.5 and will sell for $999 (educational customers get a $100 discount off that) reports MacRumors. And you won't be able to find it in stores or online. You can only get this by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.
While Final Cut Pro X is available for considerably less ($299), it has been panned by Final Cut users, including late-night darling Conan O'Brien, who blasted it for removing key elements of what made Final Cut Pro so great: multi-camera editing, customizable workspaces and more than one timeline per project. Reviews were so bad, Apple had to come out with a FAQ page, and rival Adobe jumped on the discontent and offered discounts for those who chose to jump ship and switch to its video editing programs.
Ars Technica reported that there was even an online petition signed by 8,000 that "demanded the source code to Final Cut Pro 7 be sold to a third party."
Don't hold your breath for that one. If it really matters to you, best to get that bundle now, while you can.
