Zimbabwe rejoices as Mugabe steps down
Robert Mugabe, the world's oldest ruler, resigned as Zimbabwe's president on Tuesday, after last week's military coup.

Members of the International Apostolic Ejuwel Jekenisheni Church dance, sing, pray, and play drums during a morning service at the open-air church on the outskirts of Harare on Nov. 19. A day after huge crowds rallied peacefully in the capital, Zimbabweans around the country attended Sunday church services praying for peace and the future of their country.

Lawmakers erupt in cheers at the news of Mugabe's resignation on Nov. 21 in Harare.
The 93-year-old despot wrote a letter saying he was quitting "with immediate effect,” said Jacob Mudenda, speaker of the country’s Parliament.

Zimbabweans celebrate in neighboring Hillbrow, Johannesburg, on Nov. 21. Zimbabwe's economy shrank by more than a third from 2000 to 2008, sending unemployment above 80 percent. Several million Zimbabweans fled, mostly to South Africa.
