After five years of severe drought, the first major wildfires raged across the state. The Butte County wildfire swept through grassy foothills and destroyed 10 structures, including homes, and led to several minor injuries. The blaze was one of three in California that grew quickly as much of the state baked in heat that broke records.

A horse runs from burning grasslands in the Long Valley fire near Doyle, California on July 13. Timber and brush parched from a years-long dry spell and thick grass that grew after drought-busting winter downpours are making for early and unpredictable wildfire behavior that California officials haven't seen for years, if at all.
Crews were making progress against dozens of wildfires across California, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.

Musician turned politician, Bobi Wine is a critic of President Museveni and has amassed huge public support which won him a seat in parliament by an overwhelming majority.

Members of the Orange Order and their supporters take part in the Twelfth of July parade on July 12, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The controversial flashpoint has seen many outbreaks of serious public disorder in the past due to contentious parades.
The parade passed off peacefully with no nationalist protesters lining the Orangemen's route past the interface, a move which many political commentators regard as progress between the two communities.
The annual 12th of July parades mark the anniversary of the protestant King William of Orange's victory over the Catholic forces of King James at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

Two men raise a Confederate battle flag on the South Carolina Statehouse grounds July 10 in Columbia, South Carolina. The ceremony was timed to mark the second anniversary of the state’s decision to remove the Civil War banner.
The flag-raising was also a protest against recent moves by lawmakers in Southern cities like New Orleans and elsewhere to remove Confederate monuments from the public areas where they have stood for decades.

President Donald Trump exits his car as he arrives for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris on July 13. Trump will be the parade's guest of honor to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I. U.S. troops will open the parade Friday as is traditional for the guest of honor.


A blue whale skeleton is displayed in its main entrance of the Natural History Museum in London on July 13. The museum suspended the gigantic skeleton to draw attention to the vanishing species in an environment under strain.
Scientists named the 82-foot whale Hope,' recognizing the role of science in safeguarding the environment. The immense creature seems to fly over the atrium and its visitors — a visible reminder of nature's power.
