Aloha from space
Hurricane Lane approaches Hawaii on Aug. 22 in an image captured by NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold from the International Space Station. The crew "sends much aloha to everyone there," Arnold tweeted.
Hawaii residents strapped in and forecasters warned of "life-threatening impacts" for the arrival of what could turn out to be the strongest hurricane to hit the islands in a quarter-century.

Helicopter rescue
Residents are rescued from flooding by a navy helicopter in India's southern state of Kerala on Aug. 17.
Torrential downpours began hammering Kerala on Aug. 8, more than two months into the annual monsoon season, setting off devastating floods that left more than 200 people dead and sent more than 800,000 fleeing for dry land.


67 years apart

Venezuelan exodus

Officials from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru will meet in Bogota next week to seek a solution to a growing exodus of migrants overwhelming South American countries as they flee a devastating economic crisis in Venezuela.

Typhoon approaches
A huge wave hits a breakwater in Aki City in western Japan as a Typhoon Cimaron approached the area on Aug. 23.
The typhoon was expected to cross western Japan on Thursday night. Japan's weather agency warned of strong gusts, high waves and heavy rain.

Sprintern
NBC News intern Cassie Semyon, 21, runs from the courthouse with the jury deliberation results in the trial of former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort in Alexandria, Virginia, on Aug. 21.
Manafort, a fixture in Republican politics for decades, was convicted of five counts of tax fraud, one count of failure to file a report of foreign bank and financial accounts and two counts of bank fraud. The judge declared a mistrial on the 10 other charges he faced.
Semyon was a cross-country runner before college.


Weighing the penguins

Home to more than 19,000 animals and 800 different species, the zoo regularly records the heights and weights of all the creatures to monitor the residents' overall well-being.

Banks closed on Aug. 19 in Venezuela as they prepared to release the "sovereign bolivar," a new currency printed with five fewer zeroes in a bid to tame soaring inflation.

Silent Sam

Father's grief

Seattle strife
A man who was protesting with groups supporting gun rights is treated for an injury during a rally and counter-protest on Aug. 18 near City Hall in Seattle.
The right-wing groups Washington 3 Percenters and Patriot Prayer were holding the rally to protest an effort to launch a gun-control initiative that would raise the age in Washington state for people buying semi-automatic rifles.
Dozens of police kept protesters and counter-protesters separated.

Championing survivors
Simone Biles competes on the balance beam during day four of the U.S. Gymnastics Championships on Aug. 19, 2018 in Boston.
Biles took the top honor at the event, becoming the first woman to win five all-around titles at the championship. As she competed in Boston, the 21-year-old Olympian wore a pale teal leotard — the same shade that is used as the ribbon color for sexual assault awareness and prevention.
“(The color) is for the survivors,” Biles told the Associated Press. “I stand with all of them.”
