Bombs exploded at two Coptic churches in Tanta and Alexandria in northern Egypt as worshipers were celebrating Palm Sunday, killing at least 43 people and wounding about 100 in an assault claimed by ISIS.

The blasts came at the start of Holy Week leading up to Easter, and just weeks before Pope Francis is due to visit the Arab world's most populous country, which has been beset by extremist violence against its minority Christians.

Pope Francis washes the feet of inmates at the Paliano detention center, south of Rome on April 13. The pontiff washed the feet of a dozen inmates at a maximum security prison on Holy Thursday in a pre-Easter ritual meant to show his willingness to serve society's most marginal and give them hope.

"If you can do something, a service for your companions in prison, do it," Pope Francis urged the prisoners during his homily. "This is love. This is like washing feet: to be the servant of others."

It's the third Holy Thursday that Francis has spent at a detention center, part of his longstanding emphasis on ministering to prisoners and the need to give them rehabilitation and hope.
