A chimpanzee escapes from a zoo in Japan, castaways signal for help, a duchess pets an elephant and more of the best pictures of the week.





Racegoers attend Ladies Day, the second day of horse races at the Grand National Festival, at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, northern England on April 8. The annual three-day meeting culminates in the Grand National, the biggest betting race in the United Kingdom.

Chacha, a male chimp, screams at a worker in Sendai, northern Japan on April 14, after fleeing from a zoo and trying to avoid capture by climbing an electric pole. Chacha was on the loose for nearly two hours before he was sedated and returned to the zoo.


Two men wave life jackets next to a large "Help" sign made of palm leaves as a U.S. Navy P-8A maritime surveillance aircraft spotted them on the deserted island of Fanadik in Micronesia on April 7. Navy airplane crew members spotted the survivors and shared their location with relatives as well as with ships in Guam. A small boat then picked the men up and took them to Pulap in Micronesia.

A Russian army sapper works at the historic part of Palmyra, Syria, in a photo released by the Russian Ministry of Defense on April 9. Russian army sappers are taking part in an operation to defuse mines planted by ISIS militants in the ancient city, which was recaptured by Syrian troops on March 27. Experts have reportedly removed 1,500 mines from the city.
