Turkish police carry the coffin an officer killed last Friday during the failed military coup during his funeral procession in Ankara. Turkey on Wednesday intensified a sweeping crackdown on the media, the military, the courts and the education system following an attempted coup, targeting tens of thousands of teachers and other state employees for dismissal in a purge that raised concerns about basic freedoms and the effectiveness of key institutions.




Thai performers demonstrate as a Buddhist monk ordination takes part in a candle procession parade marking the start of the Buddhist Lent in Suphan Buri province. The Buddhist Lent or "Khao Pansa" is a three-month-long period starting on the first day after the full moon of the eighth lunar month. Buddhist monks must reside inside their temples to study and meditate. This is also the most auspicious time for Buddhist ordinations since it marks a period of renewed spiritual vigor.


A Palestinian girl checks the fire damage to her family house in the West Bank village of Douma. No injuries were reported. A Palestinian official who monitors settlement-related activities in the northern West Bank said that "settlers were the main suspects in the apparent arson attack," suggesting that Molotov cocktails could have been used. An investigation by Israeli police is underway.
