Sunday Study Guide: Jindal, Patrick, Roundtable

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA)

  • Currently in his second term, Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), chairman of the Republican Governors Association, recently criticized the Republican Party, saying it was time for the GOP “to stop being the stupid party” and there were “a number of Republicans that damaged the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments.” Following the State of the Union, Gov. Jindal also told NBC’s Brian Williams that while the GOP must remain consistent with its principles, “we have to show how our principles are aspirational, how they help people join and thrive in the middle class.”
  • Gov. Jindal also wrote “Leadership and Crisis.”

Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA)

  • Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) is in his second term as governor and has declared he will not seek a third term in 2014. Gov. Patrick was recently in the national spotlight when he picked a former aide, William “Mo” Cowan, to temporarily fill the Senate seat vacated by newly sworn in Secretary of State John Kerry. A special election will be held on June 25.

Roundtable: Ford, Noonan, Inskeep, Bartiromo, Cramer

  • Former Rep. Harold Ford (D-TN)said of sequestration, “Who I’m most upset with is Washington. If you’re a pedestrian watching, this is the same conversation that took place from Election Day until Dec. 31. They’re saying the same things. I’m a Democrat, I’m for the president and it’s, in some ways, distressing to watch both sides.” Watch his most recent Meet the Press appearance here.
  • Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan wrote in her column this week that with President Obama, “it is always government by freakout.” While it may work in the short-term, “government by freakout carries a price. It wears people down. It doesn't inject a sense of energy, purpose or confidence in those who do business in America, it does the opposite.” Watch her most recent appearance on the show.
  • Steve Inskeep is thehost of NPR’s “Morning Edition.” This week on the show Inskeep covered the ongoing debate about comprehensive immigration reform this week, and whether the president’s leaked proposal could make reform a partisan issue again.
  • CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo spoke this week about the impending sequestration and dysfunction in Washington, but also the long-term implications of the country’s debt and deficit and the effect it will have on future generations. She said, “If that doesn’t wake Washing up, well I don’t know what will.” Watch her latest MTP appearance.
  • CNBC’s Jim Cramer recently said talk about the sequester will build until the deadline is here but, he said, “I just don’t want to go overboard with what I think could happen. The scare stories about the military make me feel like we’re putting our force fields down, our defense shields coming down. It’s just probably not going to be like that.” Here is Cramer’s most recent appearance.
