The man whose bomb threats caused a flight from Canada to Panama to return to Toronto almost two hours after taking off has been released on bail Saturday. Ali Shahi, 25, was released on 1,000 Canadian dollars bail in an Ontario court after receiving multiple charges, CBC News reported. Conditions of Shahi’s release included orders not to board an aircraft or enter Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
Sadegh Shahi, the 25-year-old’s father, told reporters that his son will spend at least 72 hours at a hospital to undergo a psychological evaluation as requested by his family, according to CBC News. Sadegh Shahi said that his son has a history of mental illness and that the family had called the police “more than 23 times” asking for help with Ali, to no avail. Ali, a student at Lakehead University, caused Sunwings Airlines Flight 772 to divert back to Toronto after shouting threats that he wanted to “bomb Canada,” according to police. His family told CBC News that he became agitated over the price of cigarettes on the plane.
