Two young children were killed when an SUV drove through a Nevada home on Monday, according to police.

Reno police are investigating what caused a 66-year-old man to crash into the South Reno home after he apparently failed to stop at an intersection.

A mother, her 2-year-old son, 4-year-old daughter and teenage niece were in the house when the SUV rammed through it around noon (3 p.m. ET), killing the two youngest children, according to a statement from the Reno Police Department.

The mother and teen were not injured, Reno Police Department spokesman Tim Broadway told NBC News.

The statement said the driver, who was brought to a local hospital with minor injuries, was being cooperative with investigators. Police do not think alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash.

Witnesses told NBC affiliate KRNV that the driver, who has not been identified, was driving at about 60 mph before slamming into the house.

A neighbor, Larry Kucher, rushed to the home as soon as he saw the SUV plow through it.

"I worked my way to the front of the car ... and found one of the kids, and I could tell he wasn’t alive, but I took his pulse," Kucher recalled. "The mom tried to grab a hold of him, so I grabbed her and took her back and went back. And then that's when I seen the other little kid."
