A man leaving a rooftop party in Manhattan was seriously injured when a landing on the building's staircase collapsed early Sunday morning, causing him to fall through three flight of stairs and leaving dozens of others stranded on the roof.
Firefighters responded to the seven-story building on Second Avenue in the East Village at around 1:30 a.m. and were able to remove the injured man from the building on a stretcher. The full extent of his injuries were unclear, though police said he was in stable condition.
Approximately 30 to 40 people who were gathered on the building's roof for a party had to be brought down by firefighters using a tower ladder and the building's fire escape. No other injuries were reported.
Officials from the Department of Building's inspected the staircase after repairs were made and deemed it structurally sound. The building had no recent violations on record.
No word yet on what caused the staircase to collapse.
