The North condemned the annual joint exercises by the South Korean and U.S. militaries, which come days after South Korean fighter jets mistakenly bombed a civilian area during a warmup drill.
It was unclear why North Korea, which has been slowly lifting pandemic restrictions since it sealed its border in 2020, had closed again to foreign visitors and how long the suspension would last.
The warning by Kim Yo Jong implies that North Korea will most likely ramp up weapons testing activities and maintain its confrontational posture against the U.S.
The additional troops have been sent to combat a Ukrainian incursion in Russia’s Kursk region, the reports said, though the scale of the new contingent wasn't immediately known.
The trip indicates North Korea may be gearing up for a full resumption of its international tourism to bring in much-needed foreign currency to revive its struggling economy.
