Jenna Ushokwitz is going from glee club to Broadway diner. On July 29, the former “Glee” star will begin a stint as one of the trio of women leading “Waitress.” The musical, which was adapted from the 2007 film of the same name with a score by Sara Bareilles, is Broadway’s first musical with an all-female creative team, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Ushkowitz, best known for her role as Tina Cohen-Chang on “Glee,” is filling in for the role of Dawn, played originially by Kimiko Glenn. Glenn, who is taking a leave of absence for unspecified reasons, is currently filming Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. She has not announced a return date.
This is not Ushkowitz’s first time on Broadway. The Korean-born actress made her Broadway debut when she was only nine years old, in the 1996 revival of “The King and I.” She also performed in the original Broadway production of “Spring Awakening” with future “Glee” co-stars Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff.
