Vice President Joe Biden is slated to lobby members of the Democratic National Committee on the Iran nuclear deal on Wednesday, according to an invitation to a conference call for DNC members obtained by NBC News.
The 2:15pm ET call is “regarding the historic nuclear deal that the United States and coalition nations have reached with Iran,” the email reads. “Vice President Joe Biden Joseph R. Biden will join the call to discuss the provisions of the agreement.”
When members return from their August recess, Congress is slated to take up a “measure of disapproval” regarding the deal negotiated by world powers and Tehran. Republicans are pushing aggressively to reject the historic accord; President Barack Obama needs a total of 34 senators to back him in order to prevent a Senate override of his expected veto of any legislation rejecting the deal.
So far, 28 Senate Democrats have come out in support of the deal, while two – Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York and Bob Menendez of New Jersey – oppose it.
Biden’s pressing of his own party on the Iran deal comes as the vice president explores a potential presidential bid in 2016. He has indicated that he will make a decision on whether to launch a primary campaign by the end of summer.
