Jason Collins, an NBA center, became the first male athlete actively playing in a major American sport to come out as openly gay on Monday.
“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay,” wrote Jason Collins in an editorial for Monday. The NBA center who most recently played for the Washington Wizards but was previously with the Boston Celtics became the first male athlete actively playing in a major American sport to come out as openly gay. Collins continued, “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.”
