Around 34,500 stairlifts have been recalled in the United States following reports that two people were killed when the chairs fell apart.
British manufacturer Acorn Stairlifts urged anyone using certain versions of its $3,400 mechanical chairs to contact the company immediately, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Tuesday.
The warning came after two reports from the U.K. that people had died after "the seat post had separated from the main seat support," the agency said.
"If a consumer is able to use the stairs safely, then he or she should not use the lift until it is repaired," the CPSC added.
The models being recalled were five versions of the Acorn Superglide 120, which was manufactured in Britain and sold for around $3,400 between March 2007 and December 2011.
