ROB SCHMITT (HOST): You love this tariff plan, even as it does become more of a political liability, even as China proves to be a pretty tough negotiator. Where are you at tonight?
BATYA UNGAR SARGON (GUEST): That opening was so brilliant, Rob, because you really laid out the stakes here. We have an enormous class divide in this country. The working class, the hardest working Americans have simply been left out of the immense prosperity that we have generated in recent decades. And that has been enabled by this divide between consumers and producers. We could not have had this massive class divide open up in America if not with China's help. And of course, Wall Street is very much on the side of the elites. They are trying to punish the president for doing what he promised he was going to do, which is to stand up for the forgotten men and women of the heartland of this country.
You know, the elites are out there acting like if an iPhone suddenly costs more money, that this is the same as if food and gas costs more money. It is not the same. There are things we have to consume and things we don't have to consume. Not all inflation is the same. And I think when you think about things the way you put it as a divide between the elites who are going to be fine, and the working class who has been struggling to achieve the American dream, that is where President Trump's energies are. That's where his efforts are. And it is great to see this playing out.
