BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Senators failed to override Governor Kelly Armstrong’s veto on Senate Bill 2307 covering library books.
The bill would require public and school libraries to place books considered obscene or sexually explicit in areas not easily accessible to minors.
It would have also required safeguards for online databases provided by these libraries.
Failure to do so would have resulted in public funding being withheld or even prosecution.
Supporters argue the bill was necessary to protect minors from accessing inappropriate content.
It failed in a 25-to-20 vote. They needed 32 to override.
Opponents say it’s too broad and imposes vague burdens on professionals.
