Jury finds Eric Thompson guilty in second love triangle murder trial
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Jury deliberations ended Tuesday with a verdict in the murder retrial for Eric Thompson.
The East Honolulu contractor was accused of murdering Waipahu acupuncturist Jon Tokuhara in January 2022 after discovering Tokuhara was having an affair with his wife.
Thompson’s first trial in 2023 ended in a mistrial when the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.
This time around, the jury found Thompson guilty of murder in the second degree. He was also found guilty of a firearm charge.
Shortly after the verdict was read, the state’s motion to revoke bail was granted and Thompson was taken into custody.
Both sides return to court Wednesday morning to determine whether Thompson should receive an extended sentence.
Murder in the second degree carries a term of life in prison with the possibility of parole. Thompson is subject to extended sentencing as a multiple offender for the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Families of both Thompson and Tokuhara were in the courtroom. They did not speak to the media, but a friend of Tokuhara told Hawaii News Now he’s relieved that it’s over.
Tokuhara was “not a homewrecker. He’s a nice guy,” said Elton Escobido. “I mean, he gives back to the community. Like for high school, if you’re participating in a sport and you’re in the medical field, guess what? You get a $2,000 scholarship.”
When Thompson took the witness stand a second time, the prosecution pointed out inconsistencies between his latest testimony and the testimony from his first trial back in 2023.
They believe Thompson is the only one who had the motive and the means to execute the murder.
Thompson’s attorney has argued that he was nowhere near Tokuhara’s clinic at the time of his death.
Thompson previously testified that he was dumping construction material at the Waimanalo Convenience Center the night Tokuhara was killed.
The defense also presented the possibility of other suspects, saying Tokuhara had previous relationships with other married women.
