We get it. White bedding has a timeless appeal; gives off a crisp and clean, ‘hotel-like’ feeling; helps to create the illusion of a larger space; and is easy to style as it matches all colour palettes and bedroom aesthetics. But let’s admit it: it is also a bit boring.
Scouring the homeware sections of our favourite high street brands, however, it seems like we’re finally ready to let go of the minimalist appeal of white duvet covers, and embrace bedding sets in bigger, bolder and brighter patterns.
From deckchair stripes to romantic ruffles, scroll down for the maximalist bedding trends to buy into this spring.
Specifically deckchair stripes, which come back around each spring and summer because they evoke a nautical look. This season, mix stripes in different colours and levels of thickness, as well as vertical and horizontal patterns to add depth and visual interest. Additionally, the use of stripes can also create an illusion of a larger or more expansive bedroom; horizontal stripes can make a room feel wider, while vertical stripes can add height to a room.
Often associated with dated bedroom décor, floral bedding gets a bit of a bad reputation. Depending on the colour palette, the type of flower and the size of the pattern, it works in both contemporary and cottagecore spaces. For the layered look that’s all over your Instagram feed, pair a duvet cover in a bold, large floral print with pillowcases and a flat sheet in ditsy floral prints, or even delicate stripes, in complementary colours.
Thanks to the small and simple yet playful pattern, gingham has enough personality to cosy up your bedroom without being too overwhelming or busy. Plus, gingham bedding is available in a wide range of colours, from bright reds and pinks to muted greens and blues, which means it can easily be matched with different décor styles, including farmhouse-inspired, coastal-themed and minimalist spaces.
Not quite ready to ditch the white bedding? Embrace maximalism through textures (think seersucker, waffle and crinkle detailing) and decorative borders, such as coloured piping, scalloped edges and ruffles. Ruffled bedding instantly adds texture and dimension, making the bed look fuller and more inviting, and it’s easy to layer too. For a bold take, mix a white duvet cover with patterned pillowcases and heavier throws.
