How do credit repair companies work?
Credit repair companies will dispute negative and inaccurate items on your credit reports with the three main credit bureaus. They'll also liaise with your bank or other creditors to dispute information.
Here's how the process works:
Sign up: You'll enroll with the credit repair company you want to work with. Typically, you'll pay a first work fee a few days after enrolling, which is an initial charge for starting services. You'll need to provide the company with your information.
Assessment: Your credit repair company will review your credit report and identify negative, inaccurate items that could be removed.
Make disputes: Your credit repair company will start sending dispute letters to the three credit bureaus, asking to remove inaccurate information. Credit repair companies cannot remove accurate negative information.
Monitor your score: Oftentimes, these credit repair companies give you access to a dashboard that can help you track and monitor your score. Keep an eye on this to ensure your credit is rising as promised.
You can do most of these things on your own, including reviewing your credit report for errors and sending dispute letters to credit bureaus ( the CFPB has a template), but many people prefer the support of an outside company.
Credit repair companies are different from credit counseling programs, which are usually run by non-profits and focus on helping you budget and create a debt management plan.
How much does credit repair cost?
Credit repair companies start with an upfront charge, called a "first work fee," and have monthly fees for their services.
The first work fee can be between $79 and $195, while monthly charges range from $69 to $149.
How long does it take to repair credit?
The amount of time it takes to remove negative items from a credit report depends on the number and nature of items to be addressed and the steps taken to rectify the situation.
If you're reporting an error, you may see an increase in your credit score in as little as three months. If you're trying to address late payments or other legitimate dings to your score, they can remain on your account for up to seven years.
What determines your credit score?
- Payment history: Your history of making on-time and in-full payments accounts for 35% of your score, making it the largest single factor.
- Overall debt load: The balances on outstanding loans and the amount of available credit you're using accounts for 30% of your score.
- Length of credit history: The average age of all your credit accounts makes up 15% of your score.
- Amount of new credit: The number of inquiries you've made for new accounts makes up 10% of your score..
- Credit mix: How well you're balancing credit cards, mortgages, auto loans and other loan types accounts for 10% of your credit score.
