After taking a few months off at the beginning of 2015 to unwind from her Pure Heroine tour and the process of curating the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack, Lorde is back in the studio focusing on her “next body of work,” as she describes in a new Tumblr post. The New Zealand alt-pop star writes to fans about the process of piecing together what will presumably become her sophomore album, and how she used Robyn‘s majestic 2010 single “Dancing On My Own” as inspiration of sorts during a recent studio session.

As Lorde describes it, she was recently in the studio “with some new friends” talking about songs they wish could remain immortal. Someone said Lou Reed‘s “Perfect Day,” someone else said the Beach Boys‘ “God Only Knows.” Lorde’s choice: “Dancing On My Own.”

“[T]his song, to me, is perfect,” she writes on Tumblr. “it’s happy and sad, fiery and independent but vulnerable and small, joyous even when a heart is breaking. every line is perfect, how that second verse (‘stilettos and broken bottles / i’m spinning around in circles’) stumbles perfectly into that bridge (‘the lights go on, the music dies / …i just came to say goodbye’), and final chorus. it’s just perfect. we put it on right there in the studio, and i was up out of my seat dancing with my eyes screwed shut, and my hands up around my ears, and we looked into each other’s eyes and sang the words, and i could feel something hot and teary in the back of my throat just from FEELING so much at once. and i think it was then when i realized i’m going to be in love with music for the rest of my life.”
Although there’s no timetable for the release of Lorde’s follow-up to 2013’s Pure Heroine, which spawned the Top 10 hits “Royals” and “Team,” producer Joel Little confirmed last week that a new album was indeed in the works. “We’ve written a couple of songs,” said Little. “We haven’t done a whole lot of production on it yet, we just want to make sure the songs are really good and try and experiment with some new things — just different beats and whatever occurs in the studio.”
Lorde, who attended the Met Gala and rocked out to Florence + The Machine in Brooklyn earlier this week, added at the end of her Tumblr post, “know that i’m taking my time to make the new stuff as good as i can. know that music is still making my heart skip every day. can’t wait to hang out soon. love you. xxx L.”
